The Standing Branch: Crafting Your Sacred Staff at Awen 2026
Join us Friday morning, July 10th, for our Druid Staff Workshop at the Awen Gathering.

Join us Friday Morning | Workshop Area

As we gather this July under the wide Montana sky, we come together to celebrate the Awen—that flowing spirit of inspiration that moves through the trees, the wind, and our own creative hands. This year, we invite you to ground that inspiration into a tangible ally: The Druid Staff.
Whether you are a seasoned practitioner or a curious traveler on a nature-based path, the staff is more than a walking aid. It is a mirror of the self and a bridge between worlds.
The Axis Mundi: Your Vertical Connection

At the heart of our workshop, we will explore the concept of the Axis Mundi, or the World Pillar. In many ancient traditions, the staff serves as a portable version of the World Tree. When you hold your staff, you are holding a vertical bridge that connects the three realms: the deep, mineral “bones of the earth” at the base; the human world where your hand finds its grip; and the airy, celestial world of the spirit at the topper. We will discuss how to consciously “set” these connections into the wood, turning a simple branch into a living map of the cosmos.
Celtic Symbolism and the Flow of Awen

The Celts held a profound “tree-wisdom,” believing that every species carried a unique signature of the divine. From the protective rowan to the sovereign oak, the wood we carry speaks a language of its own. We will delve into the lore of the Ogham—the ancient Irish tree alphabet—and look at how the staff was historically used as a tool for measurement, memory, and magic. By understanding these symbols, you can begin to “write” your own story into the grain of the wood, allowing the staff to become a repository for your personal inspiration and lineage.
Prepare for the Journey

We encourage you to begin your workshop experience before you even arrive. If a particular branch has “called” to you on your home lands or during your travels, please bring it with you. We also invite you to bring small items to personalize your work:
- Stones and Crystals: To serve as “grounding” points or crown elements.
- Charms and Tokens: Ribbons, feathers, or copper wire to bind your intentions to the wood.
- Personal Symbols: Anything that represents your unique connection to the natural world.

A Note on Travel

We know that traveling with long staves can be a challenge. If you are flying or have limited space, do not worry! We will have a selection of beautiful Maple staves available onsite for you to adopt and begin your work with. Maple is a wood of balance and promise—the perfect canvas for the Awen to flow.
Come prepared to share stories and leave with a companion that will walk beside you for years to come.
We look forward to seeing what the woods bring to the circle on Friday morning.
